Hello folks. As always, thank you for reading PEOPLISM’s articles. March has come to an end while we have been in a hurry. We are planning to write several articles introducing ISM in April. Please check them out as well as the start of your new life, it may be a good opportunity to change your mind and life. I wish you all to enjoy your daily life!
This time, let me introduce you to one-shot manga that I’ve read. It is a manga about ISM peculiar to the student age, and it makes me want to regain something I lost as an adult.
It’s called “写して”(means like ”Take a pictures of me.”) and is currently being published in Jump+. The author is Noboru Yamamoto. The main character, Suzaki, who will graduate from high school this year, is about to have her “graduation photo” taken. For high school students, it is something that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Everyone wants to look good in it. The main character, Suzaki, suffered a scar around her eyelid when she was a child, and her left and right eyes are open at different angles. She tries to hide it with her bangs and take a good picture, but the school rules about bangs are very strict. And the teacher was very stubborn. She faces these obstacles with the involvement of the new teacher, her classmates, and the photographer.
She is not a rebellious personality. Rather, she has a seriousness that makes her endure not to sleep during class when everyone else is asleep. She is like that, but in front of her stubborn teachers, she does not give in at all. That single-minded desire to “look good in the graduation photo” is what drives her.
This is ISM, I thought. At the same time, I had goosebumps all over my body as I read. I remembered. When we were high school students, there were moments that teachers could never understand, but we absolutely could not compromise. There were moments when we wanted to challenge, even if we knew we would be scolded. Looking back on it now, it was a very trivial thing. But at the time, it was different. There was our own ISM.
It should not be only logic or theory that creates ISM. I am sure there are things that come from within. I would like to ask you all to think back once. When you were in high school, was there something you could not compromise on? That may lead you to a new ISM.
Please look forward to the next issue of PEOPLISM.
